*Nearly a dozen of the burgundy Virginia Tech baseball caps worn Monday night by the Washington Nationals as a tribute to the victims of the shooting rampage at the college are on their way to the school.
The caps are signed by the players who wore them, says general manager Jim Bowden, who also wrote a letter to the Virginia Tech president to accompany the shipment.
The hat worn by the Nationals' Chris Snelling, whose RBI triple came on the Atlanta Braves' John Smoltz's 102nd and last pitch of the game, has been sent to the Hall of Fame.
Bowden tells the bizarre story of how a suggestion in an e-mail from fan Dave Lanham of Calvert County, Md., ignited the team's search for 40 Virginia Tech hats. They were finally located at a sporting goods store...
