Novel holds haunting similarities to tragedy

Free Food for Millionaires by Min Jin Lee may be the right book at the right time.

It's a first novel that, through sheer coincidence, opens a door onto the inner lives of a community that has been much in the news: Korean-Americans.

It is written by someone who emigrated to the USA from South Korea when she was 7 years old, nearly the same age, she notes, as Virginia Tech shooter Seung Hui Cho when he arrived.

Like so many in the Korean-American community, Lee says, she is "heartbroken" over the deaths at Virginia Tech.

"I couldn't sleep for the past couple of days," Lee said this week. "I'm going to start crying, sorry." She says she is "haunted" by the timing of her book's publication.
