June Allyson got pregnant, Judy Garland's personal problems took her out of the picture, and Jane Powell ended up with Fred Astaire in Royal Wedding (1951, Warner, unrated, $25; a twofer with The Belle of New York). Many reasons, and often death, lead to casting substitutions. Three examples:

The Cincinnati Kid

Spencer Tracy had been ailing throughout the 1960s and had to be replaced by Edward G. Robinson in John Ford's Cheyenne Autumn. Robinson stepped in again in this cautionary tale about a poker pro's life on the road. The movie turned out fairly well, although Tracy opposite Steve McQueen would have been something. And director Sam Peckinpah was fired and replaced by Norman Jewison.
