Kane poised to be next U.S. standout

The Russian hockey program is known for turning out dynamic skaters. The Canadian program is known for developing hard-nosed, well-rounded players.

For years the Americans have been looking for their identity, and Chicago Blackhawks rookie Patrick Kane seems to have an answer.

"The biggest thing we have is character," Kane says. "We play a style of game where we don't quit whether you are ahead or two goals down or five goals down. You finish your check, and you play hard. You have a work ethic. That's what I got out of playing in the U.S. national program."

That attitude, mixed with dazzling skills, is why Kane was the No.1 pick in last summer's draft and why he is considered the next American star. He played one season in the National Team...
