Not long ago, TV fans searched in vain for their shows online. Now, they often have several sites to choose from.
Episodes of Fox's House, for example, can be bought for $1.99 on Amazon or iTunes or watched free on Fox.com or Hulu.com. Hulu, the newest site, is currently in beta testing and has Fox and NBC episodes with ads. It's similar to Joost.com, which has CBS series, among others.
The networks are "trying a whole bunch of different digital avenues to see what sticks," says Russ Crupnick, entertainment industry analyst for the NPD Group. "I'm sure there are some other motivations, too, such as, 'We don't want to get Appled,' the same way the music industry did, or miss out on a major revenue stream down the road."
