Weather Channel sale could open floodgates

NEW YORK -- It may rain cash soon at Landmark Communications: The Virginia-based newspaper and broadcast company said on Thursday that it's considering strategic alternatives, including a sale of cable network The Weather Channel and companion website Weather.com.

"At this early stage, we cannot speculate on where this process will lead," CEO Frank Batten Jr. said in a statement.

Landmark's properties also include daily newspapers The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot, The Roanoke (Va.) Times, the News & Record (Greensboro, N.C.) and The Capital (Annapolis, Md.) as well as CBS-affiliated TV stations in Nashville and Las Vegas.
