'Grinches who stole the Globes'?

The striking Writers Guild of America can claim a high-profile victory in obliterating the Golden Globes ceremony. And though it's not likely to have a big impact on the larger fight for a contract, it is making Tinseltown a bit jittery about the season's biggest event: the Academy Awards.

Often touted as "Hollywood's biggest party," the Globes have been reduced to a televised news conference Sunday (NBC, 9 p.m. ET/6 PT), and the movie industry has lost a top showcase. "This undoubtedly strikes a blow to the heart of what studios do," says Steven Zeitchik of The Hollywood Reporter. "This was a big event, a marketing event where studios promote their films that have a harder time breaking out. Clearly, that was something that the guild was very conscious of."
