Talk about hitting the NBA lottery: In one of the biggest gifts in league history, Keith Van Horn will be compensated $4.3million to fill a New Jersey Nets roster spot for about as long as it takes to say "DeSagana Diop."
The often-injured 32-year-old forward was included in a sign-and-trade deal announced Tuesday that delivered Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavs had retained Van Horn's rights; he had never filed retirement paperwork.
Van Horn has not played for two years and lives with his family in Colorado. He assured NBA Commissioner David Stern that he will report to the Nets and remain with the team for at least a month because of salary-cap ramifications. He is not expected to play.
