Cruise? Manure? It's all the same in the sales game

The invitation was too good to be true.
"Our accounting department shows that you have been awarded two round-trip airline tickets ... to anywhere in the Continental USA."
It also said that if I responded within 72 hours, I would receive a complimentary rental car for a week.
I bit and called the toll-free number.
There was a catch, of course. I had to attend a 90-minute presentation to get my "free" trip. But without even knowing there would be trays of cookies at this event, I agreed. Curiosity got the better of me.
To make a long evening short, the pitch was from a wholesale travel club that sells "luxury vacations at wholesale prices."
That is after you pay an $8,995 one-time membership fee, a $199 documentation fee and $399 in annual dues. Total investment: $9,593.
