Alabama:
Birmingham -- Subpoenas were issued seeking records and other documents relating to the Alabama two-year college system's former vice chancellor of fiscal and administrative services. Debra Dahl was fired from that position last year. The subpoenas also seek documents about business the system did with an investment banking business where Dahl's brother is an officer.
Alaska: Fairbanks -- A store here, OK Lumber Ace Hardware, removed novelty cigarette lighters from its shelves after fire officials warned they could harm children. The lighters look like toy animals, miniature cars, mobile phones, cameras, fishing lures, stacks of coins, markers and doll accessories.
Arizona: Phoenix -- Faced with declining enrollments and funding problems, school districts across the state are slashing their budgets. The Mesa Public Schools district is cutting nurses, librarians and speech experts, and the Scottsdale Unified School District trimmed $4.8million from its budget for next school year.
