Rona: He needs to stretch himself into other genres and capture a new audience while not ticking off his hard-core base. Stop working the whole thing so hard -- it's about singing, not just stylin'.
Gene: Surprise us. If, in addition to one or two comfort-zone performances, he's able to pull off a truly devastating job on a piece of material we'd never expect him to tackle, that would do it.
Charlie: David can't be considered a shoo-in anymore, not with his song-picking antennae suddenly awry. Fans want to be surprised by David, which means taking a ballad and singing it straight, or making a dramatic change of genre as we first saw with Hello. If ...
