Gill's reach fortifies Pens' defense

PHILADELPHIA -- An NHL rink is 85 feet wide or the total of Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Hal Gill's reach in either direction.

That's how it must seem for opponents with 6-7 Gill playing a key role in Pittsburgh's improved defensive play in the postseason.

"He has such a big wingspan and a long stick," Pittsburgh defenseman Ryan Whitney said. "He can throw his stick out so far, and players don't realize that they have to protect the puck when he is still far away from them."
