U.S. needs to explore both energy options
USA TODAY, June, 2008
I was surprised to see the energy policy debate was Alaska drilling vs. clean energy. Do they contradict each other? No ("Alaska drilling is no quick fix, but it needs to happen," Our view; "Embrace clean energy," Opposing view, Tuesday).
As a working American who copes with the high cost of gas every day, I want to say that we need both. We must embrace clean energy and invest more in developing it.
There is no reason to oppose drilling in Alaska and offshore if it can be done in an environmentally friendly way.
Alaska oil reserves were discovered a long time ago, but all the United States has done is to spend years debating whether to drill. Nonsense? Maybe not when gas was cheaper.
Today, we are facing a real energy crisis. No time should be wasted.
