McCain's military record qualifies for presidency

Retired general Wesley Clark's questioning of whether John McCain's "riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down" is a suitable qualification for president is insulting (On Politics, USATODAY.com, June 30).

McCain's wartime experiences more than qualify him to be president. On the other hand, Barack Obama lacks military experience, and he has only a few years of political experience.

Also, McCain has something far more important than combat leadership of a large unit at the highest levels. He has character -- something Clark lacks and Obama can only dream about.
