Tweaks keep players in hunt

Tiger Woods captured the initial FedExCup last year, but even PGA Tour officials recognized there needed to be changes in the format to generate excitement.

After skipping the first playoff tournament, Woods finished second in the Deutsche Bank Championship and won the BMW Championship and the Tour Championship. He had such a commanding lead after two starts that he could have skipped the Tour Championship in Atlanta and still won the Cup.

Woods is out for the season after reconstructive knee surgery, but the changes are expected to eliminate a similar situation this year.

"We knew we needed to have more movement in the playoff events," said Joe Ogilvie, who was one of four player directors on the Tour Policy Board last year. "We knew we had to have more people with a legitimate chance to win. Frankly, we may have overdone it with our changes."

Woods earned four victories ...
