Penalties awaited in WNBA melee

Tuesday's brawl between the Detroit Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks brought the WNBA unprecedented national attention, and punishments announced today will likely be equally noteworthy.

After Detroit's Plenette Pierson took Candace Parker to the ground in the closing moments of the Sparks' 84-81 win at The Palace of Auburn Hills (Mich.), coaches and players exchanged words and blows. Pierson and assistant coach Rick Mahorn (of NBA "Bad Boy" fame) were ejected from the Shock, Parker and DeLisha Milton-Jones (who punched Mahorn in the back) from the Sparks.

"I have been covering women's basketball for 18 years and the WNBA since its inception in 1997, and I have never seen anything even close to this," ESPN game analyst Doris Burke said.
