The good news finds us on a boat whose skipper is leggy Radha Mitchell, instead of some Skoal-dribbling character actor. The bad is a product of the insanity displayed by even being on board: Mitchell's tour vessel takes tourists up an Australian river to where killer crocodiles dwell. Despite jacket art that suggests schlock, this well-reviewed chiller is, in fact, one of those grimy melodramas in which both Australian and New Zealand directors often display real flair. The boat is grounded on a tiny mud island, the nocturnal tide is rising, and King Croc is feeling territorial. Just when it seems the story has peaked, Aussie filmmaker Greg McLean (2005's Wolf Creek) simply laughs at us via visual effects that won last year's Australian Film Institute Award.
