Baseball will give replay a first run

Major League Baseball, traditionally resistant to change, announced Tuesday that it is joining the technology age and implementing instant replay.

Baseball, the last major sport to use video to aid in officiating, will employ instant replay on disputed home run calls beginning with series that start Thursday. It will be used through the postseason and re-evaluated this winter.

"I am old-fashioned. I love the sport the way it is," Commissioner Bud Selig said, "but the time has come for this. I believe that the extraordinary technology that we now have merits the use of instant replay."

Replay will be used solely on "boundary calls." It is up to the crew chief's discretion to review whether potential home runs are fair or foul or cleared the fence or...
