Veterans move on to new NFL jobs
0 Comments | USA TODAY, September, 2008 | by Skip Wood
For many NFL players, the holiday weekend wasn't a cause for celebration but a reason to worry.
Teams had to cut rosters to the maximum of 53 players by Saturday, and a lot of veterans suddenly found themselves out of work. Fortunately for some, it was temporary joblessness.
*Running back Rudi Johnson was among three former Pro Bowl players released by the Cincinnati Bengals during the Labor Day weekend.
By Monday night, however, Johnson was a member of the Detroit Lions, signing a one-year deal, hours after working out for the team, according to his agent.
"Rudi's excited to jump-start his career, and his goal is to push the Lions over the proverbial hump and into the playoffs," Peter Schaffer told USA TODAY.
