Pitcher John Smoltz has put together a potential Hall of Fame career with the Atlanta Braves. Now, at age 42, he's preparing for his American League debut.
Smoltz, who came up with the Braves in 1988 and has 210 wins and 154 saves, is scheduled to come off rehabilitation and make his first start Thursday for the Boston Red Sox in an interleague game in Washington.
He'll take the rotation spot of Daisuke Matsuzaka, 18-3 last season, who is on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He has an 8.23 ERA this season.
Smoltz hasn't started a game since April 27, 2008.
