La specola, florence - Hotlist - anatomical models - Brief Article

ArtForum,  Summer, 2001  by Mark Dery

www.specola.unifi.it/cere/wax-collection.htm

An eighteenth-century anatomical museum, La Specola is home to a justly famous collection of visible women (medical teaching aids whose exposed organs can be removed) now visible online, as well. It's at once the Sistine Chapel of ceroplasty (the art of modeling anatomical specimens in wax) and the stage for a pathological beauty pageant worthy of David Cronenberg, where women are at last appreciated for their inner beauty.
