Alighiero e Boetti
ArtForum, Sept, 1999
WHITECHAPEL ART GALLERY
We hear a lot in America about what a lot we don't hear about - the bulk of Europe's art, basically, since the Atlantic keeps all but the biggest stars out. Apparently, though, the English Channel is worse: The late Alighiero e Boetti is of settled reputation in New York, but in England he's barely a rumor. This compensatory fifty-work retrospective will include the mid-'60s sculpture (like the lamp that lights for II seconds a year), the magazine-cover drawings, the embroideries (world maps, acrostic-like letter puzzles), and more. As Andrea Tarsia, who collaborated with curators Judith Nesbitt and Antonella Soldaini, says of Boetti's disparate oeuvre, "The art of the '90s has revisited Conceptual art from many different perspectives - he was already doing that at the time." Sept. 15-Nov. 7, 1999.
