"Juliao Sarmento: Flash Back"
ArtForum, Sept, 1999 by Jan Avgikos
PALACIO DE VELAZQUEZ
Elegantly austere, hermetic yet charged with intimations of erotic desire, Juliao Sarmento's paintings describe moments that are forever seared in the memory of the iconic figures etched on canvases like hieroglyphs. Paintings from the '80s and '90s, including a series that developed out of works shown at the 1997 Venice Biennale, will be exhibited along with sculptures in this 127-piece retrospective, entitled "Flash Back," which references the psychological texture of the work and signals the inclusion of Sarmento's lesser-known films and early works from the '70s - collages, drawings, and photographs. Oct. 14, 1999-Jan. 7, 2000; travel dates and venues to be announced.
