Marlene Dumas
ArtForum, Sept, 1999
MUSEUM VAN HEDENDAAGSE KUNST
Marlene Dumas is of the same generation as Francesco Clemente, and like him she was a deft enough painter to open a space for herself in the '70s, when figurative work was barely stirring in its sleep. Like Clemente's, her art is erotic and formally delicate, but her repetitions and variations bow further toward Conceptualism, and her palette has a northern sobriety - as if somewhere in her pigments there were a layer of ash. A big show like this one (some 50 paintings and 100 drawings from the '70s through the '90s) is right for her work, which often uses plurality to ask its questions. Sept. 12, 1999-Jan. 16, 2000; travels to Camden Arts Centre, UK, Jan. 28-Mar. 19, 2000; Henie Onstad Artcenter, Oslo, dates to be announced.
