STEDELIJK VAN ABBEMUSEUM
In 1968, Ger van Elk modestly characterized an artist as "a person who does tricks and entertains a small audience in a special way." Probably best known for his (often comical) manipulated color photos of the '70s, van Elk has worked an impressive range of media and techniques. (Gasp at the artist's ability to balance ice-cream cones on his nose!) Beneath the engaging tomfoolery, however, his is a theoretically sophisticated, consciously political practice. SVA curator Marente Bloemheuvel has divided the show into two consecutive parts. The first features more than thirty-five older paintings, sculptures, and photographs; the second, fourteen videos, films, and looped projections from the late '60s to the present. Part I: Sept. 4-Oct. 31, 1999; Part II: Nov. 30, 1999-Jan. 2000.
