The discovery of the Americas was a renaissance event; the general imposition of European control, a baroque process. No wonder the Baroque continues to haunt the cultures of Latin America. The upside of it is that the term covers the hybridity and syncretism thought essential to contemporary identities just about everywhere. If so, maybe that handy prefix "post-" will regain some of its old magic, helping MCA senior curator Elizabeth Armstrong and independent curator Victor Zamudio-Taylor finesse their ambivalence toward the nonetheless irreplaceable label "Latin American" as they showcase fifteen artists from Chile to Mexico. Sept.23, 2000-Jan. 7, 2001; travels to Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; SF MOMA; and other venues.
