Beyond Preconceptions: The Sixties Experiment - Brief Article

Like last year's "Global Conceptualism," "Beyond Preconceptions" attempts to offer a more decentralized view of the art of the '60s than canonical accounts have. In that light, the title seems as much a prescription for visitors as a description of the work. Beyond Beuys and Broodthaers, Hesse and Weiner, or even the rediscovered Brazilians Helio Oiticica and Lygia Clark, curator Milena Kalinovska includes figures with stubbornly local reputations: Argentine Victor Grippo, Canadian Betty Goodwin, Yugoslavian Mangelos, to name but a few. Will the wide-net approach lead to a more inclusive account of a turbulent decade? Or will we be left with a merely fragmented and subjective view?
