Cy Twombly: Fifty Years of Works on Paper - Brief Article

ArtForum,  Sept, 2003

PINAKOTHEK DER MODERNE

Some people think Cy Twombly's paintings are little more than glorified drawings. They'll be able to check whether there's a difference of more than support and scale by visiting this exhibition of works on paper, organized by Michael Semff and Julie Sylvester (and on view at the Hermitage until September 21), in honor of the artist's seventy-fifth birthday. The eighty-six items on view, covering half a century of work, should serve both to chart Twombly's development as an artist and to isolate the specific nature of his draftsmanship, in which paper itself, as Roland Barthes once said, becomes the object of desire. Oct. 8-Nov. 30; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, Jan. 2004-Mar. 2004; Serpentine Gallery, London, Apr. 2004-June 2004.--BS
