Painting at the Edge of the World - Walker Art Center - Brief Article

ArtForum, Jan, 2001 by Meghan Dailey

WALKER ART CENTER

The tune's familiar--group show featuring solid international cast organized around loose curatorial theme--but here it has a new refrain. Curator Douglas Fogle will focus on painting; the twist is, he frames it as a philosophy rather than a practice, a proposition suggestive enough to lift this venture out of the survey rut. A riff on the "genetic mutation" of painting, that is, how its constitutional tropes extend to other mediums, this exhibition of thirty international artists (ranging from Marcel Broodthaers, Hello Oiticica, and Paul Thek to Marlene Dumas, Nader, and Mike Kelley) will include photography, Conceptual-sculptural approaches, performance-based works, and, yes, paint on canvas. An extensive catalogue is promised. Feb. 10-May 6.
