Marcel Breuer: Vitra Design Museum - Weil Am Rhein, Germany - Brief Article
ArtForum, May, 2003 by Claire Zimmerman
This big retrospective, culled by independent curator Mathias Remmele from the Vitra's impressive archival collection, extends the recent Breuer recovery efforts. Partially lifting the shadow cast by fellow Bauhauslers Gropius and Mies, original drawings, photographs, models, interactive digital displays, video projections, and, of course, furniture (from 1925 to the late '70s) portray Breuer as major Weimar designer and successful late modernist a la Saarinen, Rudolph, and Kahn.
With a catalogue edited by Remmele and Vitra director Alexander von Vegesack, the show promises major scholarly contributions: Essays by Breuer monographers Barry Bergdoll and Isabelle Hyman join texts by Joachim Driller, Otakar Macel, and Breuer himself. Aug. 23-May 23, 2004; Vitra Design Museum, Berlin, June 25, 2004-Nov. 14, 2004.
