South Of The Border Success

American Fitness, Nov, 1998 by Kelly Laidlaw

An unprecedented convention, "Educacion a lo Maximo," the first aerobics and fitness event of its kind held in Mexico City last August, was a great success. Held at the Hotel Plaza Lancaster, the three-day event offered a variety of master classes, workshops and lectures. Ten Mexican and five American instructors and AFAA approved providers, including Lauri Reimer, Lloyd Lewis, Bob Hernandez and Alison Lowe, presented workshops and classes.

The strong focus on education in fitness training proved the difference at this convention. "This was a big step here in Mexico," says convention director Yolanda Vega. "Although we have many fitness events, most of them have not focused on education the way this one did." Vega was the mastermind behind this unique gathering. She is also an AFAA consultant, interpreter and host for AFAA workshops in Mexico.

Event organizers were pleased with participants' reactions. Information was interspersed with fun and camaraderie as participants got to know one another over the course of the convention. Because of the positive results, conventions such as "Educacion a lo Maximo" may become more prevalent in fitness education south of the border.
