The American College Health Association (ACHA) has teamed up with top extreme sports athletes such as ESPN X Games skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, stunt biker Dave Mirra and U.S. Olympic snowboarder Barrett Christy to increase public awareness of hepatitis B through their public service announcement and print ad campaign, "Hepatitis B: Why Take the Risk?" "Although the majority of cases occur in young adults, many people in this age group don't have a clear understanding of the risk," according to Pamela Bown, M.D., president of ACHA ... It seems sex sells everything these days. Now, sex will be selling-sex! Well, safe sex, anyway. Ansell Personal Products, which markets LifeStyles condoms, will be using visually sexual themes in its new line of advertising as of August, starting with a run on Howard Stern's late-night CBS program. "Advertisers use sex to sell everything, yet condom ads in the U.S. avoid overt sexuality," according to Carol Carrozza, director of marketing for Ansell Personal Products ... They've got the beat! Musician John Tesh and Kellogg's[R] have teamed up with the American Heart Association (AHA) to promote "For Heart's Sake '98," a program designed to increase public awareness of the risk factors and preventive measures for heart disease. Tesh has produced a special CD compilation for the program featuring eight of his greatest hits ... Need fitness equipment? Equipment manufacturer Cybex International, Inc., has entered an agreement with BusyBody, the largest health and fitness specialty retail chain in the U.S., to market their line of machines in more than 70 stores nationwide ... Congratulations to Deborah Evans, who was named spa director of the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida ... Caster Communications, Inc., announced last September they will coordinate all publicity and sponsorship efforts for Christina Rondeau, undefeated amateur female kickboxer and member of the U.S. kickboxing team ... Big bucks are rolling in for the sports equipment industry. The National Sporting Goods Association reports that sports equipment sales exceeded $1 billion for the first quarter of 1998 ... And finally, the award for "Best Looking Feet in Sports" goes to the Women's National Basketball Association. Only 17% of their trainers reported cases of onychomycosis (nail fungus infection).
