Body maintenance

American Fitness, Jan-Feb, 2003 by D.K. Howe

There's a reason massage is now a mainstay at major sporting events, such as the Olympics and the Tour de France. According to the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB), there are five good reasons. Massages:

* improve range of motion and prevent injuries to muscles and tendons

* boost energy and endurance

* promote endorphin release, thereby reducing pain caused by constricted muscle fibers

* increase lymph flow, which filters out toxins and waste products

* maintain physical condition, which can help improve overall performance.
