Happy New Year and Happy APEX!

American Fitness, Jan-Feb, 2005 by Meg Jordan

For over 20 years, AFAA has launched the new year with APEX, the annual convention representing AFAA's unwavering commitment to provide instructors with the most creative new programs, groundbreaking research and exciting classes available.

APEX 2005 is bound to outdistance all previous conventions with its terrific line-up. Be sure to look over the program schedule included in this issue, and get yourself booked at a convenient location.

But the real news at this year's APEX is not just that you will get another chance to update your teaching skills--it's a first peek into the most significant advancement to hit your profession in years: the National Boards.

Seems as though change is always afoot in this industry, especially when it comes to certification and licensure. For a couple of decades, we've witnessed the push for state-by-state, mandatory licensure come and go, with the effort usually receding due to a stellar job of self-regulation from various professional organizations, universities and institute programs. When an industry adequately governs itself with performance benchmarks and competency exams, the need for government intervention is often rendered unnecessary. Consumer safety is always an issue, but with certifications such as AFAA's, the public is in good hands.

But a groundswell of support regarding the establishment of a National Board of Fitness Examiners (NBFE) has gained momentum, and AFAA has decided to join forces since--this time--the advantages are distinct and evident for fitness professionals. The NBFE won't certify per se, but will provide an exam, known as a "National Board," similar to those taken by doctors and other professionals. When a fitness instructor passes National Boards, the highly valued merit and recognition will be customarily unquestioned nationwide.

AFAA is an NBFE affiliate, and the clear advantage of attending APEX 2005 is that you get a head start in preparing to take these new standardized tests. You must hold a current AFAA Personal Fitness Trainer Certification (or Personal Trainer Certification from another NBFE Affiliate) to be eligible for the National Boards. For exact details, read the APEX brochure (page 23).

Also, APEX 2005 offers new workshops that are right in step with today's growing markets: Midlife Fitness for Women, The Metabolic Connection to Obesity and Injury Prevention and Exercise Progressions. Plus, with a couple of sponsored CEU presentations on Music Essentials for Group Exercise by Power Music[R] and Resistance to the Core[TM] by Resistance Wear[R], you'll be decked out with tools and know-how for your best year yet.

Love,

Meg
