I read Meg's editorial in the September/October issue. As a 58-year-old woman, who at 48 weighed over 300 pounds and lost 130 pounds over a period of two years, I don't need experts to tell me "the way." In fact, people are disappointed with my answer when they ask, "How did you do it?" and "How have you kept it off?"
I eat a balanced diet, including as much whole grains as possible (a breakfast with rolled oats helps) and a variety of fruits and vegetables year round. I count calories daily by keeping a running tally in my head. I am not compulsive, but have learned to compartmentalize my eating by always being good at home, yet allowing myself dietary freedom when I'm at a fine restaurant or dinner party. My protein sources are lean meats, seafood and beans. I learned that you must plan, shop for and prepare your food ahead of time, to maximize both nutrition and enjoyment. There is no sense going "on" a diet, since that means you'll to go "off" it eventually!
At 52, I became an AFAA certified step instructor. With the help of AFAA and workshops, I now teach a "Sculpt and Stretch" class on a regular basis, as well as substitute aerobics, step and aqua aerobics classes. Spend less time in front of the TV--or do your kids a favor and get rid of it entirely--and more time being active. I love the way I feel, full of energy and appreciative of every detail in my life. It doesn't get any better than this.

Congratulations! You've designed a lifestyle program that works for you--and learned how to be your own expert. By paying attention to the tog three longterm success principles, you're now reaping the benefits of a smart, healthy eating grogram and an enjoyable workout routine that pays off in more ways than one.
Those three principles are:
1. Make sure your healthy diet and exercise program are naturally integrated into your life, without undue stress or a sense of deprivation.
2. Make your diet realistic, with allowances for special occasions and days off.
3. Get to the point where the rewards are intrinsic--when you follow the program just for the pure pleasure, energy and good health benefits you reap and enjoy.
We're proud of you.
