Tom Segar started swimming seriously about a year ago to regain strength in his right arm after he underwent shoulder replacement surgery. He swims about four mornings a week at the Redwood Health Club in Ukiah, California, and logged more than 100 miles in 1997.
Last October, the 70-year-old swimmer completed the one-and-a-half mile Alcatraz-to-Aquatic Park "Sharkfest II" race. Posting a time of just under 80 minutes, he was the only septuagenarian in the competition. "Next year, I want to take five minutes off my time," says Segar. "The water was more choppy than I thought it would be."

Rehabilitation hasn't been the only benefit from Segar's swim program. It has helped him cope with the pressures of running Soda Creek Press, a mail order book company he founded in 1989 with his wife Lucinda May.
"Swimming can turn bad moods into good moods," adds Segar.
