Pre-dawn Fitness
While the early bird is catching its worm, many exercisers are getting in their warm-ups. The 5 a.m. workout group at the Vanderbilt YMCA Health and Fitness Center in New York City is made up of administrative assistants, stay-at-home moms, actors, lawyers and retirees. In fact, one lawyer is almost on her third mile of the treadmill by 5:20 a.m. "They all like to get their workouts done before 9 a.m.," says Kirsten Lamhaouar, associate director of health and fitness at the Vanderbilt YMCA.

Team Effort
Baseball, basketball and football still reign supreme among American youth, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. Though in-line skating is at the top of the charts for youth sports, six of the top 10 sports among children ages 6-17 are team oriented. Based on frequent participation, here's the list of most popular youth sports: 10) billiards, 9) soccer, 8) freshwater fishing (excluding fly fishing), 7) running/jogging, 6) baseball, 5) volleyball (hard surface/grass), 4) touch football, 3) slow-pitch softball, 2) basketball and 1) in-line skating.
All that Jazz
The Jazzercise Hip Hop Dancers entertained thousands of kids from all over the Greater San Diego area at the second annual Inner-City Games Celebration last October. The games were founded to provide opportunities for inner-city youth to participate in sports, cultural and community enrichment programs. "Today's festivities were a wonderful reminder that there is a strong movement in our area to provide inner-city kids with lots of healthful options to keep them busy and stay out of trouble," says Judi Sheppard Missett, Jazzercise founder and CEO.
Shooting Star Sports
Women are stepping up to the challenge. In fact, step aerobics is the sixth fastest growing sport for women, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA). SGMA, which tracks participation in 62 sports and activities, says in-line skating is at the top of the list with a 409.5% increase in participation since 1996. Treadmill, billiards, resistance machines and multi-purpose home gyms rounded out the top five fastest growing sports for women.
