Dancing to the Beat of a New Drummer
American Fitness, March, 1999
Beginning this fall, American University graduate students will be able to enroll in the only Dance and Health Fitness Management Certificate Program in the country, according to Naima Prevots, chair of AU's Department of Performing Arts. This unique program is designed to build a connection between the health and dance fields for those seeking to enhance career options and overall mindbody knowledge.
"The health fitness field examines the body, injury and wellness from one perspective while the dance field examines these issues from a different perspective," Prevots says. "Both professions have a great deal to contribute and students can benefit from learning about them."

Graduates can pursue careers in fitness management, exercise science, body therapy, dance and dance education. The program can also serve as a springboard to continue studies in health and fitness management, dance, kinesiology, mindbody knowledge and dance education.
The certificate, which can be attained in one year with the completion of 15 required credits, consists of three set courses and two elective courses covering a wide variety of topics including strategic planning in health and fitness, critical issues in health management, dance composition and principles of movement. The 15-credit requirement also makes this program ideal for professionals trying to further their education.
