AFAA goes to China
American Fitness, March-April, 2003
In a time of changing economies, new generations have more opportunities at their fingertips than ever before. This is no exception for fitness professionals. Due to its global appeal, the fitness craze is widespread, making fitness instructors hungry for more knowledge. Last October, AFAA made its mark in Beijing, China, by offering its Primary Certification and Mat Science workshops for the first time. Early in 2002, gym owners Christy Cao and her husband met with AFAA President Linda Pfeffer to discuss presenting internationally recognized educational programs to the fitness instructors of China. Cao, an ambitious industry leader, owns CY New Sports Corporation in Tianjin, a city about two hours from Beijing.

Since Beijing is the capital and one of China's most important cities, Cao suggested it as the first workshop location. The workshops were held in the heart of the city at Nirvana Gym. Cao and her hard working staff diligently spread the word about AFAA's visit to China. As a result, 50 workshop participants spent an intensive three-day weekend with Lauri Reimer, master certification specialist and AFAA director of consultant services, Pearlas Alabata Sanborn, master certification specialist and Mat Science presenter, Lisa Hamlin, certification specialist and Mat Science presenter, and Cao, who did all the translations, for one of the most memorable workshop experiences ever.
With fitness as the common denominator, the group bonded, exchanged ideas and had a tremendous learning experience. Participants ranged from physical education and fitness instructors to personal trainers and professors from all over the country. The Chinese fitness industry seems excited about more opportunities like this in Beijing as well as other cities in this large and incredible land.
