Intuitive Healing

American Fitness,  May, 1999  by Marcia Emery

How intuition and self-awareness can guide you to improved health.

You are fortunate to have an inner health advisor who can provide remedies for debilitating stress and knows the perfect fitness regimen for you. Let's call this healing wisdom your "inner physician." Do you want to improve your physical fitness, or lose or gain weight? Do you want to take better care of your body? When you have a concern about your body, simply imagine dialing up a connection to this wise inner consultant who will respond by sending you pictures, symbols and images pertaining to what steps to take.

Intuition--an inexplicable knowing beyond logic--is the mind of your inner physician. An attuned individual working with the intuitive mind has a powerful ally. His or her inner physician can constantly offer strategies for physical and mental rejuvenation and healing. Relying on your inner physician may produce a rapid and clear resolution to a perplexing dilemma. Suddenly, you know what type of exercise feels right for you and don't have to rely completely on well, intended advice from friends and family.

In my book, The Intuitive Healer: Accessing Your Inner Physician (Prentice Hall, $23,95), I present potent techniques--such as the Mindshift Method--which will help divert your focus from the logical mind to the intuitive realm, which houses your inner physician. Relaxation, breathing and imagery retrieval techniques of the Mindshift Method can help you communicate with your inner physician to personalize a strategy for optimal health.

Breathing and relaxation are vital for releasing physical tension and becoming receptive to the inner physician. Breathing goes beyond the simple act of pumping air in and out of the lungs. Breathing is the linking point between mind, body and spirit. Every change of mental state is reflected first in the breath and then the body. Becoming aware of your breathing will help you revive and nourish any aching part of the body. You can focus attention on any part of the body that feels discomfort or is in need of revitalization. The body will naturally send healing energies to that point. For example, when my energy gets blocked, I have to force myself to pause and take a deep breath directed to my solar plexus, the area just above the navel.

The imagery of a breath directed to a body part is a wonderful way of releasing tension in that area. When my left eye feels tired, I stop and direct a deep breath into both eyes. My throat is another area that holds stress when I am tense and makes it difficult for me to swallow. I take a deep breath and imagine the energy going to my throat. If I am able, I imagine a cloud in my lungs rapidly dissipating. You might like to place both hands over the painful area while breathing.

Relaxation is an important key to opening the doorway to the inner physician. Bodily tension inhibits intuitive flow. If you repeatedly affirm, "I am feeling relaxed," you will notice an energetic change. You can also take the phone off the hook and take a 15-minute relaxation break.

Here is a technique that combines directed breathing and progressive relaxation. Close your eyes and imagine energy coming into your body each time you inhale. It helps to visualize the energy as colored light, like rays of sunshine. Then, as you exhale, imagine the tension flowing out through the soles of your feet. Inhale the energy and exhale the tension. Now inhale, directing the rays of energy to the other body parts one at a time. When you finish, open your eyes and be aware of how you feel. Are you more relaxed?

Imagery can be used to combat stress. Eliciting imagery will connect you to the inner physician. First, you can imagine what the tension inside your body looks like, then use imagery to picture its release. For example, if you imagine your tension is created from having "pins and needles" inside your body, you can find a way to remove them. You can imagine someone taking the pins out of your back using tweezers.

A person feeling "tied up in knots" can imagine disentangling those knots. Likewise, a person with sore shoulders can release the pressure by picturing someone taking imaginary barbells off their shoulders. You can imagine the physical symptoms that plague you and devise an image that helps ameliorate these symptoms.

Your body will always indicate when you are stressed. This bodily awareness is expressed when toxic energies inflaming the body need to be released. The challenge is listening and becoming aware of these bodily messages.

Body builders use imagery to help sculpt the perfect physique and professional athletes hone their physical skills by actively imagining their desired end result. To infuse the body with healing chemistry, visualize yourself jogging freely, riding a bicycle for long distances or dancing gracefully.

Don't hesitate. Now is the time to let your inner physician guide you into improved health. Envision yourself as being vibrant, with every cell in your body celebrating life. As you hold this picture in mind, realize what you are picturing is true. This imagery reinforces that you have been created for radiant health and ever-renewing life. Let it happen. Your inner physician will advise when this picture needs to be reinforced and reinstated in your consciousness.
