Fitness FOR THE MASSES

American Fitness,  May, 1999

AFAA held its first Primary Certification on November 20-21, 1998, in Medellin, Colombia, headed by Certification Specialist Lauri Reimer from California. Jorge Olvera, AFAA Consultant from Mexico City, assisted. David Velez, Primary Certification examiner from Colombia, hosted the event. "This is the first time we were able to bring a top quality educational program to fitness instructors in Colombia," says Velez. "What most instructors learn from exercise videos and television is quite limiting."

AFAA is anticipating more workshops held in Colombia, as well as other areas of South America in the near future. "I am personally very excited to see so many people in Latin America interested in the programs AFAA offers fitness instructors and personal trainers," says Reimer, who has been involved in coordinating workshops in Mexico and South America. In addition to Primary Certification, AFAA now offers Step and Personal Trainer Certifications in Spanish. She adds, "This will facilitate many more opportunities for people like David [Velez] who want to bring these programs to the instructors there."
