Daily Dose

American Fitness,  May, 2000

According to the University of California Berkeley's Wellness Letter, everyone should consume up to 800 international units (IU) of vitamin E daily, as well as up to 500 milligrams of vitamin C. According to the health newsletter, "Most multi-vitamins contain 100 percent or even 200 percent of the daily value of vitamins C and E, but this is not enough to provide the full antioxidant effects and other potential benefits of these vitamins. We recommend everyone consume 200 to 800 IU of vitamin E and 250 to 500 milligrams of vitamin C per day. You'll definitely need a pill to get that much vitamin E (that's the amount in a pound or two of sunflower seeds or two quarts of corn oil). Unless you eat lots of broccoli, peppers, kiwi fruit and oranges, you'll probably need a pill to get that much vitamin C."

The Wellness Letter also notes that people who have Type 2 diabetes (non-insulin dependent), or are at high risk of developing the disease, have added reason to take vitamin E supplements.
