Breaking exercise barriers

American Fitness,  May-June, 2003  by Peter VandeMotter

In "Fitness Roadblocks" (January/February 2003) Joan Sosin points out that time and money limitations are a factor in exercise, as they are in most areas of life. Yet, it is scary to think of those people (we all know a few) who wouldn't go near a fitness center until having a heart attack or being diagnosed with a disease like diabetes. Then, they do have time to work out and decide the membership fees are within their means. I am writing this in the middle of January, when clubs are full. A few days ago, I went to a class that could scarcely accommodate any more students--but a month ago only four of us made it and the instructor was surprised that many showed up.

Another often heard excuse is, "I hate to exercise." Usually, this means the person has not found an exercise he or she enjoys. There is such a wide variety of activities to choose from. Some prefer basketball, others like to run and still others to ski. I would presume most American Fitness readers prefer aerobics, but others dislike it so much they never come back after the first class.

Perhaps we need to reach sedentary folks by finding out which exercises they enjoy and participate in. This step is essential in tailoring the program to the individual.
