MEMBERS SPOTLIGHT: Gus Gates - Statistical Data Included

American Fitness,  July, 1999  by Jennifer X. Hernandez

The status of Fourth Degree Black Belt in the art of Kung Fu was only one of Gus Gates' aspirations, but it didn't become reality without determination and discipline. As an overweight child, it wasn't easy for Gates to overcome his shyness and lack of self-esteem, but his passion for martial arts garnered him victories in many championships, as well as life challenges. Now, the 32-year-old instructor and AFAA member, born and raised in East Palo Alto, California, is helping others achieve their own fitness goals.

"I enjoy teaching master classes, workshops and certifying instructors around the world," says Gates, one of the most sought after kickboxing instructors in the fitness industry.

After 11 years of teaching kickboxing and personal training, Gates conquered the business arena by becoming president of Kardio Kick Enterprises and pioneer of "Kardio Kick," which is the newest, most exciting and innovative kickboxing workout geared toward safety. Gates combined his passion for martial arts and music, creating a kickboxing and strength training workout that is challenging yet fun.

Forty pounds lighter after practicing his innovative workout, Gates has earned a spot on the ESPN2 morning show Gotta Sweat with Cory Everson. He is also a presenter for Kardio Kick in Russia. However, Gates stresses that kickboxing is not only about the external, but what's happening internally as well. He believes that in order to be truly healthy, you have to be nutritionally balanced as well as physically fit.

Gates has many plans for his future, and one of which is to stay healthy and enjoy the company of his daughter Rebecca, life-long partner, Katie, and two sons, Tyler and Dylan.
