Cancer Statistics

Lung cancer remains the No. 1 cause of cancer death in the United States, with an estimated 156,900 deaths expected this year. From 1992 to 1996, mortality rates from lung cancer declined significantly among men while rates for women were still increasing. Although tobacco use among adults has declined, tobacco use in young people continues to increase.

An estimated 180,400 new cases of prostate cancer are expected this year, and an estimated 31,900 men are expected to die of the disease, which ranks as the second leading cause of cancer death in men. Prostate cancer remains significantly higher in black men than in white men.

An estimated 182,800 new invasive cases of female breast cancer are expected this year, and about 40,800 women are expected to die of the disease--the second major cause of death from cancer in women. The leading cancer death among women is lung cancer. For more information, visit the American Cancer Society's Web site at www.cancer.org.
