Most of us have heard of Reiki, but chances are, not many of us can explain what it is. Discover exactly what this healing art is in the recently released Practical Reiki: Focus Your Body's Energy for Deep Relaxation and Inner Peace (Sterling/Silver, $17.95) by Richard Ellis. In his beautifully illustrated book, Ellis explains this system of healing that originated in Japan and dates back to the end of the 19th century. He takes the reader on a journey through the seven chakras and our physical, emotional and psychological relationships with them, as well as the three further layers of energy around the body and their functions. For those interested in studying Reiki, Ellis explains the different levels that are taught, each having a specific set of classes. Through his writings, the reader gains insight into the practical aspect of Reiki and the parts of daily life that it can enhance. For more information, call (212) 532-7160.

Beef Up Without Beef
If you've thought about giving up meat, either fully or partially, but are afraid it may affect your athletic performance, check out Peak Performance for Everyone from Beginners to Gold Medalists (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.; $16.95) by Lisa Dorfman. According to Dorfman, athletes don't necessarily need to eat meat to produce strong healthy bodies. To prove her point, she draws on scientific research, personal experience and the insights of 17 top vegetarian athletes.
One of those athletes is Art Still, a 6' 7", 255-pound former Kansas City football player who says his vegetarian diet builds energy and endurance while decreasing body fat. Dave Scott, a six-time Ironman champion, credits his vegetarian diet as the reason he never has ups and downs in his training performance. Dorfman herself is an elite professional runner who says 98 percent of her speed, strength and endurance is due to her diet.
Whether your choice is to be a confirmed vegan or a semi-vegetarian, this comprehensive guide offers step-by-step information on how to exercise, train and compete at your best while eating a plant-based diet. The Vegetarian Sports Nutrition Guide is available at your local bookstore or by calling (800) 225-5945. In Canada, call (800) 567-4797. The Bigger They Are, the Harder They Snore
After a 14-year study, researchers from HealthEast and the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic have confirmed what women have known for years: men snore louder than women. The study also concludes the heavier the man, the louder he snores. Some research participants snored so loud they exceeded the maximum acceptable levels for nighttime noise set by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Almost 85 percent exceeded 38 decibels of sound, which is equivalent to the noise of light highway traffic.
