Breast Cancer Crusade

American Fitness, Sept, 2000

During September and October, 2000, as part of the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, more than 4,000 people of all ages and fitness levels will walk approximately 60 miles over 3 days to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. In Georgia, they will walk from Lake Lanier Islands to Atlanta. In New York, they will travel from Bear Mountain to Manhattan. And in California, they will hoof it from Santa Barbara to Malibu. Every step of the way, a volunteer crew will support the walkers with hot meals, gear transport, water and snack stops, hot showers and comprehensive medical services. Every evening, participants will enjoy entertainment and sleep in supplied tents in the 3-Day's "mobile city."

Since its launch in late 1993 by Avon Products, Inc., the Avon Crusade has funded some 500 non-profit, community-based breast cancer education and early detection programs across the U.S., from urban barrios to rural farmlands. Many of the women helped by these programs are medically underserved, poor, uninsured, don't speak English or have no other source of breast cancer information or services. This year, due to the extraordinary fundraising success in the past, the Avon Crusade has expanded its mission to encompass a comprehensive network of breast cancer programs, including new funding for medical research, support services and educational seminars, as well as increased funding for community-based, non-profit early detection programs.

For more information on the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day, to register to walk, volunteer or pledge financial support, call (888) 3DAY-AVON or visit www.avoncrusade.com. While some of the 3 days may have reached full capacity for walkers, you can still sign up as a crewmember, volunteer or offer a financial pledge.
