The Results Are In!

American Fitness, Sept, 2000 by Pat Cheung

American Fitness recently conducted a survey in an effort to gauge our readers' immersion into the Internet Age. The survey results will help AFAA to continue developing online tools and programs that will benefit fitness professionals. These results were gathered from 355 respondents who mailed in their surveys and, as promised, a winner was randomly selected to receive the AFAA Fit Kit[R]. Without further ado, here are the survey results and a brief interview with our winner. Perhaps this will reveal how you stack up against your peers in the fitness industry.

And the Winner is ...

Kris Shanahan of Arnold, Maryland

Pat Cheung: How long have you been a fitness professional?

Kris Shanahan: I have been in the fitness profession since the age of 14. I am now 31, having started personal training about 10 years ago.

PC: Is personal training your primary occupation?

KS: Yes, this is my primary occupation now that I am a stay-home mom of two children. I would eventually like to further my fitness career. Being a future AFAA employee would be nice.

PC: What kind of training do you typically do?

KS: I typically do step, hi-lo, cardio kickboxing and weight training. I have successfully competed in several lifetime drug-free bodybuilding competitions and plan to again toward the end of this year.

PC: How many clients do you have?

KS: Right now, I only have a couple of clients. However, before I moved to Maryland, my clientele included several doctors, military personnel, competitive bodybuilders and even children.

PC: Do you enjoy using the AFAA Fit Kit you won?

KS: I was very excited when I received the Fit Kit. It's great. My husband and I use pretty much everything in it.

PC: How much time do you spend on the Internet?

KS: One to two hours per week.

PC: Do you see the Internet having a big impact on the fitness industry? How?

KS: Yes, I believe the Internet does make a big impact on the fitness industry. Like I stated earlier, I've been in this field for a long time, and it is now easier to find answers and information than it was 17 years ago.

PC: How are you utilizing the Internet as a fitness professional?

KS: I use the Internet to get new choreography for my aerobics classes, find new music (my husband and I have our own aerobic tape company, "Fitness Junkies") and find out about certain medical conditions clients may have so I can design a proper/safe workout for them. I also get certification information and find out about the latest and greatest fitness information.
