Do you pig out after your workout?

American Fitness, Sept-Oct, 2004

If you're famished after working out and eat more than you should, try drinking a carbohydrate beverage while exercising. In a study of 13 normal-weight, physically active females, ages 18 to 30, participants who consumed a carbohydrate beverage while exercising consumed fewer calories afterwards than those who drank a placebo beverage.

"In young, physically fit women, consuming sports drinks during exercise may influence energy balance by decreasing the total energy intake (i.e., calories consumed) for the remainder of the day, postworkout," states Chris Melby, Ph.D., professor of nutritional sciences in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at the Nutrition and Metabolic Fitness Laboratory at Colorado State University.
