DENISE AUSTIN'S 30-MINUTE FAT BURNING WORKOUT

Denise Austin has proven to be the most prolific of aerobic stars, consistently producing about two tapes per year since American Fitness began reviewing videos in 1986. Her productions are simple, without special windows, fancy graphics or any of the other technical innovations seen in competing programs. Reviewers noted earlier citations of AFAA's Standards and Guidelines have all been corrected in this year's productions. On the whole, her biomechanics and instructor proficiency scores were above average. In this efficient half-hour program, Austin offers a moderately paced, low impact aerobic workout that is appropriate for beginner or intermediate level. Advanced exercisers said that their measured pulse rates were insufficient for a training effect. The choreography is easy to learn, and was particularly enjoyed by male reviewers. However, the camera was often a disturbing beat or two behind Denise - especially in regard to changes in foot patterns. When you're only given an upper body view, expect your feet to fail you.

Reviewers recommended that an intensity check should be done at the five-minute mark and the 15-minute mark into aerobics. It was surprising to find an exercise video produced in the past year with neither a heart rate check nor other means of checking how hard viewers were working.
